Speaker Mike Johnson, along with the House impeachment managers, has called for a public trial of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Following the House's approval of two articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas, the impeachment managers, including various members such as Rep. Andy Biggs and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urging the Senate to promptly schedule an impeachment trial for Mayorkas. The letter also announced that the House would transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate on April 10th, 2024.

In a statement released by Speaker Mike Johnson, he expressed the reasons behind the call for impeachment, stating, “Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has violated the public trust and willfully refused to follow federal immigration laws. He deserves to be impeached and the American people demand that those responsible for the border crisis be held accountable." Johnson emphasized the importance of conducting a full public trial and hearing the arguments put forth by the impeachment managers.

The letter signed by Speaker Johnson and the impeachment managers highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, "The evidence on both charges is clear, comprehensive, and compelling... The constitutional grounds for Secretary Mayorkas’ conviction and removal from office are well-founded." They called on Senate Majority Leader Schumer to fulfill the constitutional obligation of holding the trial, emphasizing the American people's demand for a secure border, an end to the crisis, and accountability for those responsible.

The call for a public trial of Secretary Mayorkas comes in the wake of escalating concerns over the handling of immigration policies and border security, with the impeachment managers stressing the need for accountability and adherence to constitutional principles.
